Born in 1961 in the village Kamenka, Balkashino district, Tselinograd region. Later, his parents moved to the village of Petrovka, which is 5 km from the district center of Balkashino. He started skiing, according to today's standards, relatively late when he was 16 years old. Vladimir has three brothers and all of them were did some skiing. In 1975-1976, representing the Balkashino district, he won the competition for the first time. It is when his elder brother Ivan suggested him to enroll in Borovo forestry school located in Shchuchinsk, Kokchetav region. Smagin Albert Pavlovich worked there as a coach and his athletes took leading positions in the country among rural athletes, and he did it too.
The time has proved that the right choice was made. Vladimir persistently and tirelessly mastered the physical and technical skills for skiing. It didn’t take too long for first success to arrive. In 1979, he is included in the USSR youth national team and in 1981 he becomes a part of the national team. In 1982, he wins 50 km race and becomes the champion of the Winter Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR. In 1984 he took 4th place (30 km) and 8th place (50 km) at the XIV Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. He is the silver medalist of the World Championships in 1987 and XV Winter Olympics in Calgary in 1984 in the relay race 4x10 km.
Vladimir Sakhnov is a four times champion of the USSR and three times champion of the Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR (1982 and 1986). He is a winner and medalist of numerous international competitions. In the beginning he preferred long distances and in last years he successfully performed in 15 km and relay races.
He currently lives in Germany. Married, has two children.
